Paneer Amritsari (Toddler & Kids’ Recipe)

Paneer Amritsari is a stir fried dish of paneer with spices, herbs and gram flour (besan). It is gluten-free, soy-free, nut-free and gets done just under 10 minutes. It can be served as a starter, side or snack in the school-boxes. Paneer Amritsari also goes well in kathi rolls, sandwiches and can also be eaten with chapati, rice-dal etc.

It is similar to tandoori paneer tikka but made without yogurt. Since it is made on a tawa it can be called a tawa paneer tikka. This dish is mildly spiced and low in heat but is very aromatic.

This recipe was inspired from a restaurant served Paneer Amritsari that we ate in Singapore. The dish originally is deep fried just like the Fish Amritsari and it tastes very delicious.

After a few trials at home, I was able to make something similar but without deep frying and the dish is super aromatic and tastes delicious.

This is our kids’ favorite paneer starter that I have made it for many years and continue to make it when we want something quick to serve as a side.

Gram flour aka besan is the star ingredient in this recipe and makes the dish extremely aromatic. The flour gets roasted in the pan and imparts those lovely flavors. The same marinade I even use to make the tikka for Paneer Pulao.

How to make Paneer Amritsari (Stepwise Photos)

1. Add chilled paneer, red chilli powder, kasuri methi, ajwain, garam masala, salt, amchur powder, ginger garlic paste and besan to a bowl.

2. Sprinkle very little water and toss to coat the paneer well with this masala.

3. Heat oil in a pan. Add the paneer and begin to roast them well.

4. Paneer cubes may stick to each other, you will have to separate them gently while sauteing. Do not over cook. When the raw smell of the besan goes away turn off and move to a plate.

Garnish with coriander leaves and onion wedges. Skew them or put them on to picks. Serve warm or hot. Do not leave them in the pan else they may get cooked further & turn rubbery.

Ingredients (US cup = 240ml )

  • 2 cups paneer chilled / cold
  • teaspoon carom seeds (ajwain)
  • ½ to ¾ teaspoon red chili powder (use less for toddlers)
  • 1 teaspoon garam masala
  • teaspoon amchur powder (dried mango powder or lemon juice as needed)
  • 1 pinch black pepper crushed (optional)
  • ½ teaspoon Kasuri methi crushed or dried fenugreek leaves
  • 1 teaspoon ginger garlic paste
  • ¼ to ⅕ teaspoon salt (adjust to taste)
  • 1 Pinch turmeric or haldi
  • 3 tablespoons besan (gram flour preferably coarse one)
  • 2 tablespoons Oil

How to make Paneer Amritsari

  • Make sure the paneer is chilled else it can easily turn rubbery.
  • Add all the ingredients to a bowl and toss them gently. If required sprinkle 1 to 2 tablespoon water to coat the flour and spices with the paneer.
  • Heat oil in a wide pan and saute paneer until the raw smell of besan has gone. Taste test and add more spices and salt to taste.
  • Paneer amritsari begins to smell good, when it is done. Switch off the heat and serve as a snack or a side with roti, rice. You can also roll them up in wraps.

This recipe is so so easy and amazingly tasty. Was done in 10 minutes. And son loved it. Had some left over rice just buttered it and mixed the remaining paneer and tossed it with salt . It made a great dish too. Thank you for this recipe.
