Health Benefits of Oats

While oats are well known as a good source of protein, vitamins, and minerals, they are most famous for their fiber. They have a variety of insoluble fibers like lignin and cellulose, as well as soluble fibers such as beta-glucan.

Soluble fibers like beta-glucan can lower cholesterol levels, slow digestion, and increase fullness–making oatmeal a perfect base for a healthy, satiating breakfast.

Sweet Oatmeal with Egg

Many people are probably familiar with the sweet version of oatmeal, which this recipe highlights. The oatmeal is sweetened with sugar or date syrup, and the sweetness is complemented by the spice of the cinnamon and nutmeg.

Topped with jewel-like little raisins to round out the flavors, it’s a special way to start the day.

And when you include the milk and egg mixture? You get a pudding-like vibe that probably also qualifies it for dessert. It’ll be delicious no matter when you decide to eat it.

As for sweet toppings, you don’t have to use raisins. Other dried fruits, such as dried cherries or chopped dried apricots, would also work. Prefer fresh? Apples or pears would be a treat.

For some crunch, coconut flakes or nuts like walnuts or pecans add texture and a subtle nutty flavor. A touch of vanilla extract would really send this over the top.

Don’t be afraid to play around with the toppings and flavor combinations to find ones you like!

Savory Oatmeal with Egg

A bowl of savory oatmeal may seem like a strange concept, but if you’re a fan of rice bowls or pilaf with eggs and vegetables this may be the recipe for you. The carrots and peas (optional) really add some real body, extra vitamins, and grassy sweetness to the oatmeal.

The cooked egg in the oatmeal makes the dish a little more filling and is perfect for people who aren’t fans of runny eggs.

Seasoned with salt and pepper, plus a hint of red chili flakes and curry powder for a little more heat and spice, savory oatmeal with egg is a healthy breakfast that will stave off your hunger until lunch.

If you feel like getting creative with your savory toppings, don’t be afraid to play around. Instead of peas and carrots, try some seasonal vegetables–spinach in the spring, sliced cherry tomatoes in the summer, chopped mushrooms in autumn, and diced squash or pumpkin in winter all add unique flavors to keep the recipe fresh throughout the year.

Don’t have curry powder? Cajun or Creole seasoning, ras el hanout, or garam masala all bring varying levels of complexity to the oatmeal.

Use whatever you have available to make this savory oatmeal with egg your new favorite breakfast.
