These chocolate sandwiches are crisp, sweet, chocolatey, nutty and fun for a special breakfast or a dessert snack. They are easy to customize to your taste and are ready under 10 mins. All you do is just grab the ingredients, assemble the chocolate sandwich & grill it to perfection! For a hearty dessert, top it with some chocolate syrup & marshmallows, serve it with your favorite Ice Cream & wafers. Make these grilled chocolate sandwiches in a pan on the stovetop, air fryer or in a sandwich toaster.
Chocolate Sandwich
These crisp and chocolatey sandwiches are a favorite with my boys. There is no rocket science in making a Chocolate sandwich, it is simply grilled sandwich with a chocolate and nut filling. For a fruity treat, layer some banana slices or even more if you love creamy cheese with chocolate go for that. I have the instructions below.
Chocolate sandwiches are often found on the menus of cafes and eateries. These sandwiches turn out as delicious as you get them there. White bread, Milk bread or brioche bread go well to make these.
This recipe uses chocolate chips and walnuts for the filling. You don’t need to melt the chocolate chips. You can use also replace choco chips with Nutella or any other chocolate spread of choice. For the walnuts you can use any other toasted nuts or replace with nut butter.
In the Step-by-step instructions I have shown how to make them in a pan, on the stovetop. For air fryer instructions check the recipe card below.

How to Make Chocolate Sandwich (Stepwise photos)
1.Use your favorite toasted unsalted nuts like walnuts, almonds, cashews or skinned peanuts. Alternately you may use store bought nut butter.
2. Chop them as fine as possible.
3. Spread chocolate chips, as much as you want.
4. Layer the nuts and optionally layer banana slices or pour maple syrup. If using nut butter instead of nuts, simply spread the nut butter on the other slice.
5. Cover the sandwich and spread some butter.
6. Heat a pan with half tablespoon butter.
7. Place the chocolate sandwich in the pan with the buttered side up.
8. Let toast on a low heat until the base turns crisp and golden. Turn it to the other side with a spatula.
9. Layer some chocolate chips on the hot toasted bread.
10. They will begin to melt soon. Spread with a butter knife or spoon. Garnish with some chopped nuts or white chocolate.
Slice the chocolate sandwich and serve. Be careful if serving to young kids, the chocolate inside becomes very hot.

Cream Cheese Chocolate Sandwich
Keep 4 tablespoons cream cheese out of the refrigerator for 15 to 20 mins so it softens as bit. Using a fork whisk it to smooth.
Spread the cheese over the bread slices. Do not use a lot as cream cheese is salted. Sprinkle some ground cinnamon.
Layer the choco chips as much as you want. Pour 1 to 2 tsps of maple syrup if you want.
Cover with another slice.
Spread some butter over the sandwich toaster and heat it. Spread butter on top of your sandwiches. Place them in the preheated toaster.
Remove when golden and crisp.
Pro Tips
Chocolate spread: You can use any store bought chocolate spread or make your own by the chopping you favorite choice of chocolate or use choco chips. Sometimes I also use leftover condensed from another recipe and mix some cocoa powder to make an extremely delicious spread.
Nuts & nut butters add some protein and nutty flavor to the sandwiches. You can use walnuts, pistachios, roasted and skinned peanuts, almonds and cashews. Peanut butter and almond butter also go well. The recipe works with almond meal as well.
Cream cheese: Bring the cream cheese to room temperature. Whisk it well with a fork. Use it moderately as cream cheese is salted. I have not tried the cream cheese and nut combo.

Recipe Card
Chocolate Sandwich
For best results follow the step-by-step photos above the recipe card
Ingredients (US cup = 240ml )
- 4 slices bread
- 2 tablespoons Butter (more if needed)
- ¼ cup chocolate chips or chopped chocolate or chocolate spread
- ¼ teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 3 tablespoons walnuts or pistachios chopped (or peanut butter or cream cheese)
- 1 ripe banana (sliced or 2 teaspoons maple syrup, optional)
Instructions
- Place 2 bread slices on a board and spread mini chocolate chips or chocolate of choice on one slice. Layer the chopped nuts all over the chocolate or spread peanut butter over the other slice.
- If you prefer sprinkle some ground cinnamon and place the sliced banana (or maple syrup if required).
- Cover the chocolate filled bread with the other slice of bread. Spread ½ tablespoon butter over the chocolate sandwich
Toasting Chocolate Sandwich on stovetop in a pan
- Melt ½ tablespoon butter in the pan.
- Place the sandwich gently in the hot pan, with the buttered side up. Let toast on a low heat until the bread turns crisp. Gently turn it to the other side with a spatula.
- Immediately sprinkle chocolate chips on top of the hot toasted chocolate sandwich. The chocolate begins to melt, spread it with a butter knife or a spoon.
- Remove to a rack once the sandwich is crisp at the bottom. Garnish with chopped nuts or chopped white chocolate.
In a Sandwich Toaster
- Add ½ tablespoon butter to your preheated sandwich toaster and place the sandwiches with the buttered side up. Cover and toast them until golden and crisp.
In the Air fryer
- You can also place the prepared sandwich (buttered on both the sides) in the air fryer. Air fry for 5 mins at 350 F or 180 C. Do not air fry for too long the chocolate can burn on the sides and the bread turns too hard.
Notes
- I prefer to go heavy on the nuts – about 8 walnuts, 10 almonds or cashews per sandwich. So I use maple syrup to make them a bit more sweeter. You may skip the sweetener and simply use banana.
- If using cream cheese, bring it to room temperature to soften. Whisk it well with a fork until smooth. Then spread it over the other bread slices.
